What is 3v3 football?
Guide · 4 min
3v3 football is a format with three players per team on a small pitch – no goalkeeper, no offside rule, and a focus on ball touches and fun. It's the ideal introduction to tournament football for the very youngest and is used mainly for U5 and U6 across Denmark.
What are the rules in 3v3?
3v3 is played with three players per side on a pitch that is typically 20–25 metres long and 15–20 metres wide. There is no goalkeeper, no offside rule and a simple set of rules adapted to the youngest players. The ball is played in along the touchline (no throw-ins) and the game is fast and constantly active. Matches are short – typically 8–12 minutes – and players rotate frequently so everyone gets enough playing time.
Why is 3v3 perfect for U6?
With only three players per side, each child is involved in the game almost all the time. This delivers vastly more ball touches than 11v11 or even 7v7 – studies show 5–6 times more activity per player. That is crucial for U6 players' motor and technical development. On top of that, the pitches are manageable, the rules are simple, and the focus is on the joy of playing rather than results.
When do you move from 3v3 to 5v5?
In Danish football, teams typically move from 3v3 to 5v5 at U7 or U8. That's when children are ready, both physically and socially, for a slightly more structured game with positions and the beginnings of team tactics. DBU recommends 3v3 for U5 and U6 and 5v5 from U7.
