Guide · 6 min
For many teams a U8 tournament is one of the absolute highlights of the season. A whole day of matches, new opponents and community – for players and parents alike. But what can you expect, and how do you prepare the team? This guide gives you the answers to everything worth knowing about U8 tournaments.
What happens at a U8 tournament?
A typical U8 tournament starts in the morning and runs until mid-afternoon. Teams are divided into groups and typically play 4–6 matches in 5v5 format. The matches are short (10–15 minutes) and there are breaks in between. The best teams from the groups usually play a final or play-off. Many tournaments have prizes for every team – medals, certificates or similar.
What should you bring?
For an outdoor U8 tournament: football boots (studs for grass/artificial turf), spare kits, water bottles for every player, fruit and snacks for the breaks, sun cream and possibly rain jackets. The organiser usually brings the balls, but always check the tournament information. Parents should bring a chair and a good mood – they are an important part of the atmosphere.
How do you prepare the team?
The best preparation for a U8 tournament is good training in the preceding weeks with a focus on 5v5 play, positions and combination play. Talk to the players about what's going to happen – build anticipation. Remember that the tournament isn't primarily about winning, but about giving every player good experiences and match practice. Praise the effort rather than the result.
What does a U8 tournament cost?
The entry fee for U8 tournaments varies a lot. Local friendly tournaments can be free, while larger cups typically cost 200–600 kr. per team. Find tournaments with transparent pricing on Matchbase, and filter by price if budget is a factor.
