Guide to U10 football tournaments

Guide · 6 min

U10 is the year where football really becomes tactical. Players now master 7v7, understand positions and can read the game. A U10 tournament is a whole day of higher-level matches, more competition and plenty of community. Here is everything coaches and parents should know.

What happens at a U10 tournament?

A U10 tournament typically starts in the morning and runs all day. Teams are divided into groups and play 4–6 matches in 7v7 format. The matches are longer than for the youngest – typically 2 x 15–20 minutes – and the best teams advance to a play-off or finals. Many U10 tournaments have level grading, so teams meet appropriate opponents.

7v7 – the format at U10

At U10, 7v7 is played with six outfield players and a goalkeeper. The pitch is larger, and the game now demands a genuine team structure with positions, cover and build-up. Players need to be able to read the game and find space. Development is still the most important thing, but the competitive element looms larger than in the youngest years.

What should you bring?

For a U10 tournament: football boots suited to the surface (studs for grass, astro boots for artificial turf), spare kits for a colour clash, filled water bottles for everyone, fruit and packed lunches, plus sun cream and rain gear depending on the weather. For indoor U10 tournaments: clean hall shoes. Always check the tournament information.

How do you prepare the team?

Good preparation for a U10 tournament is about training the 7v7 game in the weeks leading up to it: positions, build-up and combination play. Talk to the players about the team's style of play and the roles on the pitch. Plan rotations so everyone gets playing time, and keep the focus on development and effort rather than results alone. A short pep talk before the first match sets a good tone.
