How to choose the right football tournament
Guide · 5 min
There are hundreds of football tournaments in Denmark – but which one suits your team? The right choice is about more than the date. Age group, format, level, distance and price all play a part. Here is the guide to choosing the tournament that gives the team the best experience.
Match the format and age group
The first and most important thing is that the tournament's format and age group suit the team. A U8 team belongs in a 5v5 tournament, while U9 and U10 play 7v7. If the team plays a tournament in the wrong format or against a completely different year, the experience is rarely good. Always check that the tournament's year and format match the team.
Assess the level
A good tournament challenges the team appropriately – neither too easy nor too hard. Many tournaments state the level (e.g. A/B/C division or grassroots/elite). Choose a level where the team can win some matches and lose some; that delivers the best learning and the most fun experiences. For the youngest years, level matters less than participation and enjoyment.
Think about distance and logistics
The distance to the tournament matters a great deal for both players and families. A nearby tournament reduces travel time and makes it easier for parents to take part. Use Matchbase to filter by region – for example Zealand, Jutland or Funen – and find tournaments within reasonable driving distance. For the youngest, a local tournament is often preferable to a long trip.
Compare price and date
Finally, the tournament needs to fit into the season and the budget. Prices range from free friendly tournaments to larger cups costing several hundred kroner per team. On Matchbase you see the price, date and sign-up status clearly on each tournament, so you can easily compare and choose the one that fits best.
Frequently asked questions
How do I choose the right tournament for my team?
Make sure the format and age group match the team, assess the level, think about distance and logistics, and compare price and date. On Matchbase you can filter by all of these criteria.
How far should we drive to a tournament?
For the youngest years, local tournaments within a short driving distance are recommended. Older teams can take part in regional cups further away, especially for summer cups.
What does the level grading in tournaments mean?
Many tournaments group teams into divisions by level (e.g. A/B/C or grassroots/elite) so teams meet appropriate opponents. Choose the level where the team can both win and lose matches.
